James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Awards for 2006
On 27 September 2006, Mary H. Griggs, Deputy Director for Industrial Security, Defense Security Service (DSS), announced the 29 facilities selected to receive the 2006 James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award at the annual seminar of ASIS International in San Diego, California. The Cogswell award, established in 1966, is named in honor of the late Air Force COL James S. Cogswell, who was the first chief of the unified office of Industrial Security. Cogswell was responsible for developing the basic principles of the Industrial Security Program, which include an emphasis on the partnership between industry and government to protect classified information, which ultimately helps to ensure the protection of the U.S. warfighter. The Cogswell award is the most prestigious honor DSS may bestow on cleared industry and is presented annually.
DSS presents the James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award to only a select group of defense contractors. The criteria for this award focus on principles of industrial security excellence, which include establishing and maintaining a security program that goes well beyond the basic National Industrial Security Program requirements and providing leadership to other cleared facilities in setting exacting and high standards for security. The Cogswell award is given for outstanding achievement in matters related exclusively to a facility's security program. The Cogswell award selection process is rigorous. A DSS Industrial Security Representative may only nominate facilities that have at a minimum of two consecutive superior industrial security review ratings and show a sustained degree of excellence and innovation in their overall security program management, implementation, and oversight. DSS makes the final selections.
